Crowns (Caps)

Your Smile Is Our Passion

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

What does getting a crown involve?

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.

At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a same-day crown take?
Most same-day crown appointments at Kelly Dentistry take about 1.5 to 2 hours from start to finish. This includes numbing the tooth, preparing it, digital scanning, milling your custom crown in-office, and permanent placement. You walk out with your final crown the same day, no temporary required.
Yes, same-day crowns are made from high-grade ceramic blocks that match the strength and durability of traditional lab-made crowns. The CEREC milling process produces a precise fit that reduces the risk of cracking or loosening over time. With proper care, same-day crowns typically last 10 to 15 years or longer.
We start by numbing the tooth and removing any decay or damage, then take a digital 3D scan of your tooth instead of using traditional putty impressions. The scan is sent to our in-office milling machine, which carves your custom crown from a solid ceramic block in about 15 to 20 minutes. Once milled, we check the fit, polish the crown, and bond it permanently to your tooth.
Most patients who need a crown are good candidates for the same-day option, including those with cracked, decayed, or heavily filled teeth. Patients who’ve had a root canal or want to replace an old crown can also benefit. Dr. Adam or Dr. Laura will evaluate your tooth during your consultation to confirm same-day treatment is the right fit.
Same-day crowns save you from two separate appointments, wearing a temporary crown for weeks, and returning for a second visit. You also skip the messy putty impressions thanks to digital scanning, which is faster and more comfortable. The crown is milled and placed in one visit, so you get immediate function and full protection for your tooth.
Same-day crowns at Kelly Dentistry are typically priced similarly to traditional lab-made crowns, and most insurance plans cover them the same way. You may actually save on indirect costs like time off work, travel to multiple appointments, and temporary crown materials. Our team will provide a full estimate and verify your benefits before treatment begins.
Yes, same-day crowns work beautifully for front teeth thanks to the natural-looking ceramic materials we use. The digital design process lets Dr. Adam or Dr. Laura customize the shape, shade, and translucency to match your surrounding teeth. Most patients can’t tell the difference between their natural teeth and the crown.
Care for your same-day crown just like a natural tooth, with twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and regular cleanings at our Rochester office. Avoid biting hard foods like ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candy that could chip the ceramic. If you grind your teeth at night, ask us about a custom nightguard to protect your investment.
